Do U Wanna Ride

One of my favorite Jay-Z songs is a song called “Do U Wanna Ride” from the “Kingdom Come” album. This was Jay-Z’s first album after a long hiatus from recording after he announced his retirement from hiphop a few years prior.

“Do U Wanna Ride” is a song that Jay-Z wrote to his childhood friend Emory Jones. Emory ended up going to prison when they were both still young before Jay-Z’s career began. Jay-Z made better choices in his life and used his difficult circumstances as fuel to pursue music and achieve his dreams, while Emory went the opposite direction in response to a rough upbringing.

The song is a message of grace, love, and loyalty. In the song, Jay-Z is addressing Emory while he is still in prison, letting him know that he has achieved his goals, and his hard work has paid off. Not only that, but he is letting Emory know that when he gets released from prison, he can partake of Jay-Z’s accomplishments and experience the good life that he missed from all of the years in prison. This is an act of grace and love towards Jay-Z’s friend. Jay-Z paid the price and Emory technically didn’t earn any of it. Just by being Jay-Z’s friend he gets to enjoy this.

I would like to draw some parallels from this song to the good life we get to experience in Christ:
1) Much like Jay-Z’s message of good news and hope to Emory while he was still in prison, Christ preached and told us of his good plan for us while we were still in prison, so to speak.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Luke 4:18-19 NIV

2) Jesus did all of the work and conquered the enemy for us, not his own good. He did it for us! What a shame it would be if we neglected his gift of freedom, love, and blessing for which he paid the price so dearly!

'It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us. God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He’s set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating.'
Colossians 1:12-14 - Message Bible

3) In the Jay-Z song, not only does he let Emory know that they are going to have a blast experiencing the good things he has been missing, but he also mentions that he’s going to take him to his home in The Hamptons. I would like to point out something that Jesus said about mansions he has prepared for us:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God ; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
John 14:1-3 NIV

Emory Jones is truly blessed to have a friend like Jay-Z. As good as that is, it doesn’t even come close to the friend we have in Jesus. He did all of this for you to be free and experience the good life with nothing but your best interest in his mind. Follow him with your entire life. You will NEVER regret it!!

Ladies & Gentlemen - We Will Be Experiencing Some Turbulence

“Ladies and gentlemen, we will be experiencing some turbulence over the next twenty to thirty minutes.” These are words that most people don’t like to hear during a flight. I can honestly say it has never bothered me to hear that. But then again, I am pretty chill about most things, that is just my nature. However, I may look around the plane as it bounces around to see the reactions of others. No, I’m not being morbid. I just have the inner peace knowing that everything is most likely going to be okay, especially if you consider flight crash statistics versus car accidents and other tragedies.

When you hear of a situation like the Southwest Airlines emergency landing from this past week, my reaction could be different than chill during such an event, but I’ve never encountered this so I really don’t know. I could imagine it was terrifying for those on the flight. This might sound crass, but it’s a serious observation: I wonder for SWA passengers how the boarding process is now. What I mean is, I could picture being in the “B” or “C” boarding class, and walking down the aisle of the plane to see that most of the window seats are available while the aisle seats are taken.

I am writing this article, because Jesus in his teaching made an announcement similar to a pilot’s announcement concerning turbulence in these last days we currently live in. While answering his disciples questions about the end of this age, Jesus said the following:

'He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.'
Luke 21:8-11 NIV

I wonder how many people realize or know that there was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake near Mexico City this past September 2017? Here is a clip of the highlights: 7.1 Earthquake Central Mexico - click here

Honestly, I did not remember much about the earthquake beyond seeing a glimpse of a headline back in September. Possibly that is because, during that same month, there were two other major earthquakes amongst other world shaking tragedies. In ONE month last year  these things happened. Here is the September 2017 list of major events:

EARTHQUAKES:
Chipas, Mexico – 8.1 scale quake
Central Mexico – 7.1 scale quake
Central Mexico – 6.2 scale quake

VOLCANOES:
Bali, Indonesia – Alert level 4 eruption

FIRES:
Kenya – Building fire killed 7 children
Malaysia – Building fire killed 24 children
Romania – Building fire killed 19 people
Los Angeles, CA – Brush fire burned 5,800 acres – largest fire in history for the area

BOMBINGS:
Syria - Israel bombed a base killing 2 people
Afghanistan – Suicide bomb killed 3 people
London – Train bombing killed 29 people
Pakistan – Roadside bomb killed 5 people
Iraq – Suicide bomb killed 7 people
Syria  - Russian bombing killed 1 child & injured many others

ACCIDENTS:
2 separate helicopter crashes killing 5 people including country music star Troy Gentry
Myanmar refuge boat crash killed 14 people as they almost arrived in Bangladesh
Mumbai, Kenya – Stampede on a bridge killed 22 people

TERRORISM:
Plano, TX – Mass shooting 9 people killed
Nashville, TN – Mass shooting at a church, 1 person killed and 7 wounded
Edmonton Canada – Vehicle ramming attack injuring 5 people

STORMS:
Vietnam & Philippines – Typhoon Damrey kills approximately 100 people
Florida, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin – Hurricane Irma category 5 kills 134 people
East Coast US & Bahamas – Hurricane Jose category 4 killed 1 person
Puerto Rico – Hurricane Maria category 5 killed 112 people and downed power for the entire island

I randomly picked the month September 2017 as an example for this post after discovering the 7.1 earthquake video (linked earlier in this article). It is remarkable to me, that such an event did not even register in my mind. Perhaps it’s because these things are occurring almost daily and we are becoming desensitized to this type of news? Jesus did say in his teaching that these events would be similar to labor birth pains, which all moms know increase in frequency and intensity the closer you get to delivery.

I remember in the 1980’s (yes, I am that old – getting younger everyday) when a major earthquake would have definitely been the story of the month, or even the news story of the quarter, if not the year. Yes, these are the times we live in.

Back to my airplane analogy: During my most recent flight this past January, we experienced about ten minutes of some really bumpy turbulence. The plane shook fairly well, with even a few quick dips, but I stayed chill. As I looked around, I noticed a variety of responses. Yes, I had an aisle seat.  The responses ranged from a prayer that I heard audibly in Spanish, a person rocking intensely in their seat with their head down, others were staring out of the window, and several people were looking down at their tablets, possibly engaged in a book or movie.

That scenario reflects much about the times we live in. There is going to be some increasing turbulence. Some people are so engaged in the latest Netflix binge watching series that they have no clue about what is happening. Others are worried out of their minds, while there are some who are aware of the turbulence but not fretful about it. What are we as believers supposed to do?

A few suggestions from scripture:
1) Stand up and look up because our redemption is coming quickly.
2) Do not be troubled or worried in the least bit.
3) Encourage one another about God’s promises and the next age about to come.
Fear not my friends!

Don't Hurt Yourself

Have you ever worked at a job and had a ‘new  hire’ come in, and within a few days you begin to see that this person is not teachable? I’m not talking about their capacity to be taught, we are all teachable in that regard. It’s their willingness to be taught that they somehow neglected to bring to the workplace. Yes, they are at a NEW job and they can’t be taught. I have witnessed this phenomenon more than a few times. Why is that?

Did you know that there is only good that can come from being teachable? Why are some people afraid of that? The only reason I can deduct from such a posture is because they have this need to protect their ego. If you can learn to let go of that in EVERY area of your life, you will notice a tremendous change on the inside, and simultaneously you will discover a magnificent new view of the world on the outside.

Make yourself teachable, even if you’re an expert*. It’s a choice you make. Let your ego die! It’s really for your own good.

' Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor. The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.'
Proverbs 15:31-33

*I don’t really need to say that to the experts. That’s how they got there, and remain!

A Work of Art

What separates the work of the exceptional artists from their crowd of peers? It often comes down to the very small details that make the difference. Subtle things, nuances, fine lines, things that the common observers never even notice are what makes a significant difference between the average and the exceptional. This applies to music, paintings, architecture, dance, acting, cuisine, and almost anything else that you can think of.

In light of that notion, let’s take a look at this passage of scripture from the Amplified Bible translation:
'For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above, spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].'
Ephesians 2:10

Do you know those little things, where you thought, “Oh, that’s not a big deal. God doesn’t really care about that?” You need to revisit that. God is the master artist. He is crafting you in such a way, to make you into something exceptional that stands out as unique and brilliant. All master artists have their work stand out amongst the amateurs because of the details they apply to their art.

Don’t shun the details. God might be saying something like this, “let me carve this little piece out of your daily habits”, or “let me add this thing to what you do each morning when you wake up”, or “let me take these little words away that you often say”, or “let me adjust your pace a little here”, etc.

If your life is looking like something less than outstanding, perhaps it’s because of the details that you deemed to be insignificant? Let the master put those finishing touches on your life and see what happens.

One last note on this: Have you ever noticed John’s account of the empty tomb after the resurrection? It gives us a small strange detail.

‘Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. '
John 20:6-7

After Jesus rose from the dead, he took the time to fold the cloth that was covering him. Don't gloss over that. He just rose from the dead with a glorified, imperishable body and was about to walk out of his own tomb, and decided to fold up the linen cloths that wrapped him? Who does that?! Only Jesus, the Master. I took notice of this and started making my bed daily before I do much else. Believe it or not, that little thirty-second task each morning, somehow provides a ton of order to my day.

What Time Is It?

The first time I ever heard about Bible prophecy and what is known as ‘end times’ teaching, was through a conversation I had with an older neighborhood kid named Chris when I was nine or ten years old in 1979. He was probably only thirteen at the time. His family was not religious, but he had read “The Late Great Planet Earth” by Hal Lindsay. He described the book in detail to me, emphasizing that we now live in the age that was prophesied through the Bible thousands of years ago.

What was a nine year old boy in 1979 supposed to do with that kind of knowledge? Not much beyond being terrified of the apocalypse. The only thing that came out of that conversation was a nine year old's determination to resist taking the number of the beast on my hand or forehead. That is some scary stuff for a nine year old kid. I was surely not going to do that if the opportunity ever arose. It never did.

To this day, I have never read Hal Lindsay’s book, but Chris’ summary of the book in 1979 was a convincing argument that stuck with me. Throughout the rest of the twentieth century I was reminded of that indelible conversation with Chris through many other channels, some Christian and some not-so-Christian, but all pointed to the times we live in. I might be slightly satirical in the following bullet points, but these things really did speak to me as a non-believer about the end-times. Here are a few:

• My stepbrother had these end-time dreams he would tell me about in the early eighties.

• The end-time preaching of Iron Maiden and Ronnie James Dio. Run to the Hills, Two Minutes to Midnight, The Number of the Beast were amongst many apocalyptic soundtracks recorded by Maiden. The Last in Line, Holy Diver, it seems Dio had a strong theme going through his albums too.

• Countering that was the end-time heavy metal preaching of Stryper.

• The Omen and those Damien movies. Do you remember those?

• Bad VHS copies of ‘A Thief in the Night’

• Sam Kinison’s rise to popularity and his comedy being so blasphemous like nothing before.
Somehow this really stood out to me, even as an atheist.

• Ronald Reagan and Mikhael Gorbachev's one upping each other with their country’s nuclear arsenal and much talk of the end of civilization as we knew it.

• The Age of Quarrel – that prophetic album by the Cro-mags. They were about as far from Christ as one could get, yet that one album in 1986 had a message that couldn’t be any more pertinent for 2018.

I could go on and on with the cultural staples of that day. The 1970’s and 1980’s were oozing with end-time prophecy themes both in the secular and the Christian culture. It seemed to die down a little after so many of the church and preacher scandals in the late eighties and early nineties. The buzz was in the air at the time, but the convergence of multiple prophecies being fulfilled were not occurring for the return of the Lord like they are today.

Now it is 2018 and the stage is set like never before in history. The buzz is back but it’s so much stronger these days. Even the secular world is acknowledging that we have turned a corner to a different season. Do you listen to Joe Rogan’s mega-popular podcast? He constantly reminds us that these are strange times. He has even titled his current standup comedy tour as ‘Strange Times’.

I believe we are at the doorstep right now. If there were just a few prophecies coming to pass as in the 1970’s and 1980’s you could say it was time to be on-guard and to begin watching for the Lord’s return. But in 2018, it is so much more than that. It is the convergence of so many prophecies that has the sirens sounding and the alarms telling us what time it is. Here is a checklist of the convergence of things coming to pass in the last century and currently before our eyes, some of them happening just this year:

  • The rebirth of Israel in 1948. After being dispersed for 1900 years, the Jewish people came back to form a nation in their previously owned land. This has never happened with a nation in human history. Lookup the scriptures that prophesied this:

o   Ezekiel 37 the entire chapter
o   Hosea 6:1-2 says Israel would be torn down (happened in 70 AD) and after two days, which is 2,000 years on God’s calendar they would be revived.
o   Lookup these scriptures which also foretell the same thing: Psalms 107:2-3; Isaiah 11:12; Isaiah 43:5-6; Isaiah 66:8

  •  The recapture of Jerusalem in 1967 and the miraculous 6 day war. Jesus said Jerusalem would be trodden down, which happened in 70 AD, until the time of the Gentiles is fulfilled which is the 2,000 years that Hosea prophesied about. See Luke 21:24.

  • The technology to exist for the entire world to observe the two witnesses in Jerusalem that were spoken of in Revelation 11:1-14. It says of the two witnesses that the entire world would see them and hear their message. In the 1980’s it was said that the technology existed for this to happen because of simulcast transmission and satellite television. How much more true is that now in 2018 with the potential for everyone to witness this event directly on their mobile devices, tablets, and wifi throughout the world.

  • The alliance of specific nations against Israel. In Ezekiel 38 (read the entire chapter) there is an alliance of nations that come against Israel. Now there has not been a threat to Israel as of yet, but the alliance has formed and the tension is in the air for sure. Never before in history have these three nations come together for anything – Russia, Iran, and Turkey. Look at what happened just in this past week - https://www.rferl.org/a/putin-erdogan-rohani-ankara-meeting-syria-analysis/29144774.html .
In the Ezekiel 38 passage, these are the nations mentioned – Magog is modern day Russia, Meshech, Gomer, and Tubal are modern day Turkey, Persia is modern day Iran, and Cush is modern day Libya.

It also says in that same chapter, that other middle-eastern nations would take Israel’s side in the war. Not that they would fight alongside Israel, but that they would question this multi-national opposing alliance and be in favor of Israel. One of those nations mentioned is Dedan, which is modern day Saudi Arabia. Just this week, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia endorsed Israel (which has never happened before) in the Palestinian/Israeli land controversy. And they are in agreement with Israel concerning the recent threats of Iran.

  • Wars and rumors of wars. Jesus prophesied that this would be the state of the world shortly before his return. This is certainly true of 2018. See Luke 21:9; Matthew 24:7; Mark 13:7

  • Famines, pestilence and earthquakes in diverse places. These disasters have been with us since the beginning of human history. However, it is the frequency and the scope of these things occurring all over the earth that we should take notice of.
It seems like every other day we hear of a huge earth quake or a new disease or a natural disaster of some sort. Did anyone notice the continent of Africa starting to rip apart last week?

Go to this website and you can enter any year to see how many significant earthquakes were recorded. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php It is amazing to see the increase in just the past decade.

Famine is prevalent also in countries such as Yemen, Venezuela, Myanmar, and many African nations. This should not be the case in 2018 given the advancement of technology and knowledge that we have achieved. Corruption is the cause for most of it, but we will save that for another sermon.

We could write an entire blog about the epidemics in the world today. To see the increasing trend of diseases, take a look at the CDC’s website: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/

  • The rebuild of the Jewish Temple. Not only was it prophesied that Israel would be reborn after 2,000 years but also there is mention of the temple being rebuilt. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is currently in the spot where the temple used to be in Jerusalem. The Jews have not had a temple there, nor have they practiced the traditional Jewish animal sacrifices since the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. For the first time in almost 2,000 years there was an animal sacrifice and a ceremony on the steps of the Temple Mount. This happened last week during Passover. Jews have also not been allowed to congregate or pray there. But, this week there was a gathering of 1,500 Jews to pray at the temple mount. Add to that the announcement by our U.S. President that we as a country now acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and we are moving our embassy there. Things are definitely pointing in that direction.

  • The absolute destruction of Damascus. Isaiah 17 prophesied that Damascus will be a heap of ruins, and no longer inhabitable. This has not happened yet, but take a look at what is going on in Syria right now with Russia, Iran, and Turkey getting involved. Couple that with the capability of modern nuclear weapons and we are closer now to that prophesy being fulfilled than ever before.

  • Israel becoming a desert and then blooming again. Mark Twain visited the land of Israel in 1867. At that time the land was called Palestine. This was his summary of the holy land tour, “Of all the lands there are for dismal scenery, I think Palestine must be prince. The hills are barren, they are dull of color, they are unpicturesque in shape. The valleys are unsightly deserts fringed with a feeble vegetation that has an expression about it being sorrowful and despondent.” Now compare his description with what the landscape of Israel looks like today. Wikipedia says this about it, “Israel is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world leader in agricultural technologies.” These are the scriptures that foretell of the desert becoming a flourishing land: Isaiah 35:1-2; Isaiah 41:18-20; Ezekiel 36:33-36

  • The Gospel would be preached to the entire world. Jesus said in Matthew 24:14 that the end would come after his message of salvation was preached to the entire world. If we are not at that point already, we are getting there very quickly.
o   The YouVersion Bible app alone has 318 million downloads as of yesterday April  5th.
o   In 2016 there was an estimated amount of 416,000 active missionaries in the world.
o   According to quora.com there are 37 million Christian churches in the world.
Now, add to those things the millions of online sermons, blogs, YouTube messages, Christian television programs, and printed literature.  Can you see we are getting close to this message being spread across the entire world?
  •       Society in the end times would be similar to society in the days of Noah. Jesus said that in Matthew 24:36-38 and Peter also referenced it in his letter to the churches, 2 Peter 3:1-8. What did the days of Noah look like? See Genesis 6:1-6. Wickedness was filling the earth and the people had no clue that a judgment was coming. They were going on about their business, buying and selling, marrying, and partying right up until the rain started to come down. They scoffed at Noah for being righteous and did not heed his warning.

  • Men’s hearts failing for fear. Jesus said in Luke 21:26 that this would be a common thing because of the stress and condition of the world, that people’s fears would cause their hearts to fail. You can look at the stats on numerous websites. It appears that heart failure is the number one cause of death in the world.

  • Perilous times would come. Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 that the last days would be perilous. If we have to take our shoes off to enter the airport, if we need armed security guards at our elementary and junior high schools, if we can’t go to a concert or a major event that is supposed to be fun without being on guard, could you conclude that these are perilous times? Paul then goes on to mention and describe the mindset of the world in the last days. Lookup the scripture for yourself. There is a long list that pretty much describes our culture in detail - 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

  • The exponential increase of knowledge. In Daniel’s prophesy of the last days he said that knowledge would increase at a rapid pace- See Daniel 12. We can definitely say that is the case for the last one-hundred years, but even more so it is true of this last decade.

  • The roaring of the waves and the sea. In Luke 21:25 Jesus prophesied about the increase of the roaring oceans in the last days. You can look at many websites that show the vanishing coastlines in the last 50 years or so. Also, it seems like every week now we hear reports of hundreds of dead sea-animals washing to shore. We can also include the crazy hurricane seasons we’ve been having of late. And don’t let me forget to mention that we’ve had four nor’easter storms in the month of March 2018 alone.

  • The distress of nations with perplexity.  Jesus prophesied about this also in Luke 21:25. Have you been following the crisis and collapse of Venezuela this past year? Here are some other nations that seem to be in a state of distress, and they are perplexed about how to recover to a plateau of social stability: Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Haiti, Uganda, Liberia, Somalia, Philippines, Myanmar.

  • Signs in the heavens above. There are several scriptures that mention a change in the heavens during the last days: Joel 2:30-31, Acts 2:19, Luke 21:25. There have been some pretty strange happenings in the skies lately: multiple blood moons, the great eclipse across the US, increase in solar flares, that long object from another solar system that passed our planet recently (apparently that has never happened before?), and many other signs in the sky, people hearing loud trumpet sounds, etc.  Go to YouTube.com and type in the search window “signs in the sky” and you can see all sorts of crazy videos that people have captured. Some are not legit, I realize that, but there are a good chunk of YouTube videos that are real. Judge for yourself.
There are many other things I could list here, but I think we covered enough of the major signs of the times to show you that we are getting really close to the Lord’s return. There are so many crazy theories and speculations out there about the day of the Lord’s return. It is clear from scripture that no man knows the exact day or hour it will happen.

The Bible compares the event of His return to a thief in the night, most people are not expecting that. However, as believers, that day is not supposed to catch us unaware. We don’t know the specific day, and I would not pay attention to anyone who claims to, but we are supposed to know the season. The closer it gets, the more on watch we should be.

If you read this entire post, I give you props. Here is one last passage from our Lord that I will leave you with:
“When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”
Luke 21:28-32

Which generation is Jesus talking about? I believe it is us, right here, right now, the generation that sees all of these things coming to pass. We are that generation!

April Fools - Insight from an atheist

The fool says in his heart, "There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile, there is no one who does good.

Proverbs 14:1

I think this is a fitting article for today, since Resurrection Sunday and April Fools' Day fall on the same day this year. Prior to my conversion to Christ in the spring of 1987, I was a hardcore atheist. As a singer in a punk rock band, my lyrics were often pointed at making fun of Christians for their beliefs. I also engaged in debates with anyone who claimed to believe in God, and I often went out of my way to mock those who proclaimed faith in Jesus. True story.

I am not boasting by any means, I am just saying this to give my fellow believers some insight into what the atheist is really thinking.  My experience on the other side of the argument was not a passive one, so listen.

Let me tell you first of all, that arguing with an atheist or an agnostic is pointless. You can show them a million indisputable facts and that will not change a thing, to do so is a waste of time and will result in your own frustration. There is so much evidence in the earth to support creation and the one true God who designed all of this. Just take a walk outside and look at the sky. The heavens are constantly declaring the glory and majesty of God.  Also, just the fact that you are conscious and breathing without effort is only one of a million proofs in God's existence.

What is the issue then? Why don’t people believe in God? If you examine the scripture at the top of this article, it explains the situation clearly. The fool says in his HEART that there is no God. It’s a heart decision, not a logical conclusion that causes disbelief. They’ve decided at some point that they did not want God in their knowledge, so God basically allows them to continue in their ignorance.

So, do they really believe there is no God? Yes, but that belief is not based on their knowledge or logic as they proclaim. It is based on their choice, and their knowledge and logic is then thwarted because of that.

Here is another scripture that describes the mindset of many in the current world we live in:

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
2 Peter 3:3-6

Does that sound familiar? “When is he coming back? Ha, ha, ha!” Notice it says they ‘deliberately forget’ that God created the heavens and the earth. It is a choice they are making. The latter part of the passage is comparing the last days to the mindset of the world in Noah’s generation. The King James Version of the same passage describes the people as 'willingly ignorant'. It's a matter of choice.

Let me give you one more passage that also confirms this:

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
Romans 1:18-28

Does that sound like 2018 or what?!  That passage is straightforward and really needs no commentary, but let me highlight a few things. It says that creation itself displays the attributes and the power of God, so the unbeliever has no excuse. Another point to highlight is: the people suppressed the truth (there is one God, the creator) with their desire to continue sinning and so they exchanged the truth for a lie. The last point is: they did not want God in their knowledge. Again, that is a decision they made, not a conclusion they came to. And so, God gave them over to the delusion.

If you want to win over an atheist, it cannot be done through debates, even though you provide them with undeniable proofs. You need to get to their heart. Love is the only way to turn the atheist's switch from not believing into accepting what is true. Go out and show love on some unbelievers and quit trying to persuade them with your words. I speak from experience on both sides of the big debate.

Step carefully my friends!

Walking in the Lord's will for your life is like walking on a tightrope in these last days. Every step is crucial, especially the little things that you deem as insignificant. Do not shrug those off. You cannot afford to if you want to stay on target through the finish line. I am not talking only about being a Christian, this has more emphasis on doing his work.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Ephesians 5:15-17

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
Psalms 37:23

Wake up and quit hitting the snooze!

Don't judge me. I am a lifelong professional at hitting the snooze button. There have been a few times where I pressed the snooze button on those nine-minute intervals for several hours. I’m not exaggerating. It’s never a good sleep when you are doing that. I know I’m better off with setting my alarm for the absolute time to wake up, but I still don’t do that. What a terrible invention that was. Shame on GE for introducing the idea in the 1950’s!

I want to share with you about the spiritual snooze button in my life. Yes, my natural life mimicked my spiritual life for sure when it came to feeling like I needed more sleep.

I have been a Christian for thirty-one years now. I have never let go of Christ in my heart, but my Christian walk has paralleled a rollercoaster for much of the time. When I was first converted at the age of seventeen, I immediately became a Jesus zealot. That lasted a few years through my early twenties with Bible College and serving in the church, then came life. I put Jesus on the back burner when I was trying to navigate my own way through the world. I wish I could say that I was a model Christian growing in grace and faith every year, but that was not the case.

So with Jesus on the back burner, and my own plans and desires at the forefront, my life was spent stumbling in the dark for the most part. I went to church, read Christian books, and even worked at a church for a few years. But reality says I was spiritually asleep most of the time. That pattern continued for much too long until I came to the end of myself.

This past July 2017, I was spiritually shaken awake during a season of partying and not living right. One night when I had a moment of solitude, I felt like someone was shaking me saying  “Wake up Craig! Don’t you know what time it is?” It was a supernatural experience. The scales lifted off my eyes that night as I had a real encounter with the Holy Spirit. I responded with true repentance and gratitude. This happened in a Walmart parking lot. I proceeded to go on my late night shopping venture anyhow. Picture me walking through a Walmart at midnight with tears flowing down my eyes as I was saying “Thank you God for waking me up.” I probably looked like a crazy person, but then again it was midnight at Walmart, anything is acceptable.

Ever since that night, my life has been perfect. Not at all! I found myself struggling with sin and self gratification within days of that awakening on July 16, 2017. (BTW – whoever was praying for me on that night, I could never thank you enough!)

So, from July 2017 until January this year, it was a roller coaster ride again, but not the colossal roller coaster this time. I went to church weekly, but throughout the week I would find myself partying some nights. Other nights I would stay home and read the Bible. Sunday through Tuesday were usually good days, but as the weekend approached I would fall back to old behavior. It was as if I would hear the alarm on Sunday and be awake for a little bit and then go back to sleep. Total snooze button pattern. Thank God I fully woke up in January. I am fully awake now! It feels great!

Have you ever accidentally turned off the snooze button and overslept to result in being late for work or missing an appointment? That is a bad day! The sleep was not worth the consequence. Do you know that could happen to you spiritually? “Okay God, I know I need to get my act together, and I will do that when…” and back to sleep you go. What if there was not another alarm? Snoozing is dangerous!

The following account of Jesus and his three best men during his darkest hour is a literal story, but I think it speaks to us figuratively as believers in this last hour.

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. Then everyone deserted him and fled. Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
Mark 14:32-50

Three times in those few hours, Jesus kept coming back to them to find them asleep. They woke up each time, but then they went right back to sleep. That is crazy to think about. Jesus the Son of God in the flesh was there with his top three disciples during his darkest hour and none of them could stay awake. When they finally woke up because of the commotion, they still didn’t understand what was going on. I believe if they had stayed awake with Jesus, Peter would not have cut off that guy’s ear. Now that is a crazy thing to do. He almost killed someone because he didn’t comprehend what was taking place.

God’s word warns us in several places about the danger of being asleep. The following verses are written and directed towards Christians, the church, not the world of unbelievers. This is serious! Read these passages and do what it says. Don’t take the gamble of hitting the snooze button one more time. There might not be one more time. Wake up!

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light and find out what pleases the Lord. (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Ephesians 5:8-17

And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
Romans 13:11-14

I am fully aware that January was only a few months ago. Like, who am I to be telling my brothers and sisters to wake up? I can only say this to you because I am fully awake now. It took me six months through the snooze cycle to get to that point. I will explain the process in another post. But, I can tell you that my awakening should not have taken that long! It is what it is though. Thank God I did not turn off the alarm and slip back into slumber! Thank God!

All-time top five best slices of time to live in

I love watching the 400 meter relay race in the Olympics. The one where they pass the baton at each round of the track. If I had to pick which lap I would run in, it would definitely be the final lap. It's make it or break it time. Who wouldn't want to be that runner?

When you think of all the time slots or dispensations where we could have been born, which era would you have preferred to live in? What are my options you ask?

Let's look at it like this - Consider a top five list of the most desirable time slots to be alive on the earth. Now, we are going to exclude anything that is prehuman creation as shown in Genesis 1. We are just talking about the past six thousand years as recorded in the Bible. We will also throw the next millennium into the discussion. This list is my own order of preference. We're not going that deep to the point where we need to bring in actual surveys. I am just trying to make a point.

Here are my top five:
5) The time of the acts of the apostles after Jesus ascension. That would have been a pretty cool time to live in helping start the roots of the church.

4) The turn of the twentieth century and the spark of the industrial revolution.

3) The time of the formation of the United States 1776

2) The time of Jesus ministry on the earth.

1) The time we live in right now.
There is only one sliver of time where a remnant of people will not experience death. That is us right now! Our bodies will be changed because we are alive on the earth at the time of his appearing. Not to mention all of the comforts and conveniences that we get to experience in this time because of technology and knowledge being increased.

I think a majority of people really don't realize how privileged we are, that God would place us in this time slot! We are the ones that get to do the greater works! We are the ones who get to see his signs and wonders. We are the ones who get to play a part in this last bout of the spiritual battle for the souls of men. What a privilege! Gear up my friends! Gear up!

Here are some scriptures that let us know how privileged we are:

'These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. '
Hebrews 11:39-40; 12:1-2

'Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things. Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; '
1 Peter 1:10-23

' Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” '
1 Corinthians 15:51-54

Three things every believer must have in the final hour of these last days – Essential

1) A Redlist

We are told to pray for God’s kingdom to come and his will to be done in the earth as it is in heaven. I don’t believe Jesus was expecting us to pray some generic chant as a result of his teaching on prayer in the sermon on the mount. Each of you has a circle of influence in this earth. We should be praying more specifically for God’s kingdom to come and his will to be done within our individual range of vision. Sure it’s good to pray for the world as a whole, and the leaders of nations, etc. Scripture instructs us to do so. The very same passage of scripture regarding prayer says that God is not willing that ANY should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

You should have a prayer list of people that you pray for daily. I am talking about people in the world that do not know Jesus. Also on my list are those believers who are living in the dark. My prayer is that God would open their eyes and shake them awake.

Over the last thirty years in my Christian walk, I have met many people who do not know Jesus or have not embraced his way to salvation. My current list includes a lot of people I know both presently and throughout the past thirty years. My prayer for them is this: God, give them more time. Protect their lives until they’ve had the opportunity to see and accept or reject Jesus. Draw them to you with your Holy Spirit and convict them of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Send laborers across their path. If there is anything I can do or say, please let me know. Heal them and soften their hearts.

Always have an ongoing list. Add to it the new people that you meet. Pray for them daily. As people convert and grow strong, then you can place them on another list for different prayers that are more targeted to the needs of the Christian. But always maintain this prayer list for the lost people that you know.

I call my list of lost friends my 'redlist'. This means the condition of their souls is a high priority to me. It gives me a sense of urgency and helps me to think of the gravity of the situation, if they were to slip off into eternity without experiencing God's free salvation.

2) A Winch with a Big Hook

Speaking from my personal experience, I find it impossible to live this life of faith and pleasing God without having your mind, imagination, and heart fully wrapped around the truths concerning the rapture, immortality, the redemption of our bodies, the upcoming big feast and awards ceremony in Heaven, our place in the next millennium, and the urgency of responsibility in this current hour. It is imperative that you understand these things and believe in their reality. If you do that, your problems with sin and the struggle of the flesh will vanish. I am speaking this from my own experience. Either these things are real, or we are crazy. If they are real then you should live as such.

We should crave enlightenment instead of just trying to get victory over our fleshly impulses. This is the only way to be purified, made holy, and become more like Jesus. He said if you continue in my word then you will be my disciples. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.
Here are some scriptures that display how our behavior changes as a result of enlightenment:

'See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. '
1 John 3:1-3

'All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. '
Hebrews 11:13-16

Do you want your Christian walk to be easier? Do you want to breakthrough the constant struggle to control your flesh? It is a simple process if you do this – Get a solid understanding and vision of what Heaven is like. Get a clear picture of what will happen in the new millennium and make this a reality to you. You should understand fully about the glorified body which we are about to receive.

We are told to comfort one another with these words.
'Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.'
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Here we are told to SET our hearts and minds on heavenly things.
'Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. '
Colossians 3:1-4

Jesus told us exactly how to do Colossians 3:1-2. He said where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. You need to have your treasure in Heaven, literally. There is going to be an awards ceremony that you don’t want to miss. How cool will it be to get rewarded for multiple things on that day? Good times ahead!

These things need to be real to you. Just as real as the next vacation you are planning. Actually these things should be more important than your next vacation. The door is hinging open. Can’t you see it? That is where we are at in time. A new age is about to begin, but this one has to close first.

'For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.'
2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Did you catch that? FIX our eyes – this is an action. This is something we intentionally do. Quit waiting for something to happen or change. Don’t wait any longer.

I hear some saying, “Yeah brother, but you have to live a normal life and not be so spiritual and heavenly minded that you are no earthly good.” I disagree.

We have multiple passages of scripture telling us precisely what our minds should be fixed on and how we are to think. Your struggle is in trying to serve two masters, and we know that is impossible. This is not fairy tale stuff, and it is not something you should feel shamed for believing or announcing. These are events that are about to happen in our very near future. Emphasis on very near.

'Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. '
Hebrews 12:1-3

So the winch is planted and immovable. The winch represents our treasure, rewards, and mansion in heaven. On a winch, the hook and the line are fastened to pull the object desired until it reaches the base of the motorized winch. Your heart is the object in this illustration. Hook your heart to the heavenly things awaiting, and these shall pull you closer to him with everyday approaching.

3) An Open View of the Shot Clock

You have to know what time it is! In basketball, once the ball travels onto the other teams side of the court, the shot clock begins a countdown of seconds. Much like that, I believe we have crossed a line to where the shot clock of this present age has begun to tick. I would even say that we are in the last few seconds of this age. Let us make one final huge clutch-moment shot and bring a bunch of people with us as we cross the finish line.

You have to know the hour and the urgency of the times in order for you to be fruitful in these last days. Anyone who is not aware of this will experience regret when they say “Oh why didn’t I see it? Why did I just go about life as if it was the time to maintain and settle here?” You don’t want to be saying that in the near future. I think of Schindler’s list – go watch the movie.

If I have such an awareness of the hour in which we live, shouldn’t that be enough to motivate a change in lull behavior and cause me to become active in the advancement of God’s will and plan on the earth? This is the real deal. We are living in this time right now! How exciting is that! Blessed are the eyes that see what we see!

'And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.'
Romans 13:11-14
